The vuvuzela horn has come to the notice of the world at large due to the 2010 soccer World Cup which is being held in South Africa. It is an instrument traditionally used by many of the fans that go to watch football in South Africa. Therefore it is no surprise that it is popular at the World Cup this year. However not everyone is a fan of these instruments. They seem to arouse passions in both the people that want to use them and those who would rather see them banned.
So what is it about vuvuzelas that people don't like?
The controversy surrounding vuvuzela horns is that they are very loud. Therefore when a large number of soccer fans are playing them the noise can literally become deafening. Some but not all players are also critical of the instruments as they say that they affect their concentration and ability to communicate with their team mates while on the field of play. There was even talk of banning vuvuzela horns at the World Cup however the FIFA president Sepp Blatter said "I don't see [that] banning the music traditions of fans in their own country [is a good thing]. Would you want to see a ban on the fan traditions in your country?" I must admit that drums and brass bands at football matches does add to the atmosphere. Many people must feel the same about vuvuzelas. So maybe it is just because I did not know about these instruments while grown up and there for not accustomed to them that makes me dislike them. While watching World Cup matches on television it is hard to make out any of the songs that fans sing. It is easy enough to hear the commentary of course but other than that, the background noise is a constant hum of vuvuzela.
Do you want a vuvuzela?
If you would like to recreate the South African atmosphere at home it is possible to LINK buy a cheap vuvuzela online. You can find them for around about $10 so they are certainly not expensive. However their cost is not the issue. They can be really noisy depending upon how proficient the user is. But as a gimmick they are kind of interesting and they are the sort of thing that you could occasionally get some use out of.

I dont know why everyone hates the vuvuzelas so much, they are simply a part of the experience of many football fans in south africa, and I for one am happy to encourage the sale of them on my blog.
