Susono and Mt Fuji

The map below shows Susono city in dark green. Susono is a city within Shizuoka prefecture. The big black area is Mt Fuji. Susono city actually contains a chunk of the tallest mountain in Japan! I have lived here for six years and only climbed Mt Fuji once. It was a tough climb in the rain during the night. Then at dawn expecting to see a beautiful sun rise, I was thwarted by a sky full of clouds!

Mt Fuji in Susono

Mt Fuji near Susono

Mt Fuji is a symbol of Japan. LIving in Susono is great as I can see the mountain every day. Unless it is cloudy of course. The residents of Susono and surrounding towns draw power from the huge Mt Fuji. It really is an impressive sight.

Susono doesn't have any must see tourist attractions. You can see Mt Fuji from a host of other places. That said, if you ever decide to climb Mt Fuji you may well come to or pass through Susono city.

Susono and overseas exchange

Susono has a sister city relationship with Frankston near Melbourne in Australia. Every second year a delegation from Susono, part of the Susono Overseas Friendship Association (SOFA), goes to visit Frankston. The year SOFA don't go to Australia a group of Australians from the Frankston Susono Friendship Association (FSFA) come to visit us in Susono city, Japan.

Examples of cultural exchange Susono and Frankston are involved in include, home stays, study abroad, company exchanges and working placements for Frankston residents in Japanese junior high and elementary schools in Susono.

Living in Susono

Susono is a great place to live. I have been here since 2003. The lifestyle is relaxed and the food is amazing. I actually work for the Susono Overseas Friendship Association as an English teacher in both junior high and elementary schools. It can be tiring but the work is usually good fun.

I love that shot of Fuji! I love it that you lived there since 2003. I have a friend that just moved to Japan (I couldn't try to spell the city if I wanted too..he he) and he's also teaching english. Small world. Great article. Thumbs up!
